The Importance Of Staying Connected
With our ever changing world Phil and I felt our personal worlds were taking us in different directions and we realized the importance of maintaining closeness in our relationship especially as we grew older and had different personal interests with me working long hours on the computer and Phil doing what he does best – creating the beauty of art and the written word. When we both retired from the conventional world we set up an office where our desks face each other and although he does one thing and I do another we have a physical connection and we often seek the opinion of each other to reinforce what we are doing.
It has been a fantastic arrangement and I never feel like I am isolating him when I am involved in work and vice versa. When he finishes a new illustration he walks over to my desk to share it with me and since he does nostalgic work of times when we were growing up or dating we always take the time to reminisce and chat about great memories and it keeps it fresh in our memories.
And of course when I complete a new video or web page or post I always share it with him to get his opinion because over the years we have discovered that there is no opinion in the world that we cherish as much as we do each others as we have reached a point in our lives that many things which once were important to us have faded as we cherish the relationship we now have.
Our office probably tells more about who we are than any other place in the world. We have 2 recliners, side by side where we watch some really great movies. It’s strange how we seldom recognize any of the stars past the 1990?s but how we know most of the Stars and Entertainers from the 1940?s up to the 1990?s. We can thoroughly enjoy older movies – even the silent movies because of the fact that Phil’s Father, Salvatore left Brooklyn for the lights of Hollywood and appeared in dozens of movies which we can now find on You Tube and Netflix so we have a lot of variety. We bought a 60 inch Smart TV so we can see them in all their glory and admire the wonderful wardrobes they had in those days. We even see him in one of the movies wearing a turban which we still have. Memories flood back as we remember the stories he would tell a long time ago.

We have an old antique China Closet which we call our “Rock Cabinet” because we have always been rock hounds – nothing valuable but which are treasures to us because we found many with our son’s Jack, Sal and Scott. That old rock cabinet holds so many memories and trinkets that it could pretty much tell our life story and the grand kids all want to look for hour”s as we share the stories which springs out from those little trinkets.
In one corner we have a wine rack which houses some of our “Bracco Wine” collection which Phil makes. I will never forget the first time we made wine and when it was time to bottle it we had to siphon it into the bottles. What a time we had. Phil ended up sitting on the floor and it kept loosing it’s flow so he was continually siphoning it and he ended up drinking more than he bottled as we laughed until we cried.
His guitar stands close by and he plays old familiar songs every single night and sometimes he puts the old music on – from an actual record and we dance and I rest my head against his shoulder as I remember the nights many years ago when we danced in some really great place’s like Roseland, Latin Quarter, The Copa Cabana, The Hawaiian Room, Hotel Pierre, Pizza King, Ridgewood Rathskellars, the Paladium and so many other great places.

Does Anyone Remember Climbing The Stairs To Get To The Dance Floor?
We have dined in some of the best places in the US but there’s no place better then the kitchen of my Mother-In-Law. I can remember when Phil and I were dating and we would meet in the morning in the subway as we traveled to “Business” as we called it then and he would share the lunch his mother had made for him, peppers and eggs, eggs and potatoes, meat ball sandwiches and fabulous stuff which I still love today!
We have traveled and had dream vacations together and I have always felt engulfed by the protection of the man I have loved all of my life. I feel that I have had everything anyone could ever dream of.
I never want to be isolated from Phil. Thats the reason we have an office together which still gives us the freedom of being an individual while never closing the other one out.
I hope you have or will find that kind of a relationship which will last a lifetime.
